The Marcia and Billy Beer Endowed Scholarship Fund

Billy Beer was 25 years old when he arrived at the Charity Polio Unit in New Orleans in the acute stage of polio. He was placed in an iron lung that was found in the basement of Charity and was cared for by LSU doctors and nurses. He credited the iron lung and his care with saving his life. As a way of paying it forward, and to help someone without financial means obtain a quality education, he and his wife Marcia established the Marcia and Billy Beer Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will support an incoming freshman and will provide funding for their 4 years of medical school. The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, books, and essential lab equipment, but specifically may not be used for living expenses. This scholarship will be awarded to a student based on financial need, to someone who could not otherwise attend medical school without financial assistance. A likelihood to participate in community service after graduation is valued by the donor.
